This is being written on the morning after Barack Obama's historic election win in the U.S. elections. A black man as president of the USA? Who'd have thunk it?
A great leap forward for the US and the world... regardless of what he does for the next four years... this one fact puts a nail in the coffins of the neo-Nazis and Christian-Right.
Does it affect technology issues? Well we will undoubtedly see a higher than usual turnout for the election, especially amongst the disaffected youth of the day; hopefully and particularly amongst the poor and people from ethnic backgrounds.
And way back in early 2007, Obama had already embraced Web 2.0. So is this the first election to have been won thanks to Social Media?
Is it, also, the first election where the news organisations have embraced Web 2.0 - the BBC in Washington, for example, using Twitter feeds along with their usual pods and blogs and so on?
A study of the true effect of social media on this election would be truly enlightening, though probably difficult to truly measure given the inter-relation between new and old media and people's exposure to all kinds of media.
Which helped Obama more, his half-hour TV infomercial on U.S. television the day before (or was it 2 days before?) the election... or his use of new media in engaging the youth?
One thing's certain... no longer can anyone simply poo-poo the idea of Web 2.0 as being, you know, 'for kids'.
